Sofia van Leeuwen is an American artist with Dutch roots (b. 1981). She approaches horticulture and weaving as healing modalities. Her studio practice includes research with a focus on sculptural objects, looms, cordage, natural dye and digital decay.
Van Leeuwen studied plant-based color and printing at AGA LAB (Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier) in the Netherlands and studio art at Hunter College. Since 2019, she has been a steward of plants grown for fiber and dyestuff at Prospect Heights Community Farm. She is a founding member of the Brooklyn Hand Spinners Guild.
